My research focused on increasing military interest in the electromagnetic spectrum (EMS), as an enabler of technology, a type of weapon, a manoeuvre space, and a domain. In the contemporary era, geographically-based kinetic warfare and new modes of warfare, such as, information, remote operations, electronic, and electromagnetic warfare, rely upon signalic connectivity and interconnectivity for operability and interoperability of systems and devices. War now exceeds geography, extending its operational apparatus and outcomes across the world, and from land to orbiting satellites. It is vitally important, though, to remember that in active kinetic war zones, the horror of war remains physically bloody and destructive.</span></span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><b>Planetary war<br /></b></span><span style="font-family: arial;">In the age of algorithms, light-speed signalic connectivity, increasingly autonomous systems, airborne drones, and generative AI, </span><i style="font-family: arial;">Why War? </i><span style="font-family: arial;">presents contemporary war as planetary and space-based. Military technological reliance on the EMS martialises the environment from Earth to orbiting satellites. Significantly, this same techno-environment is also crucial for civilian technological operations. </span></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">In the painting the Earth is formed by red dots and painted binary code 'instructing' a ? (question mark). This white code is cross-hatched with lines - perhaps revelations of signals ricocheting around the world? The white-dotted area surrounding the 'planet' is the Earth-to-orbiting-satellite environment. This environment is punctuated with painted binary code 'instructing' the word WAR. The zeros and ones encompass the planet, at the same time as occupying the space between land and orbiting satellites.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><b>Photons?<br /></b></span><span style="font-family: arial;">The red and white dots could be interpreted as photons, the elemental particles that make up electromagnetic frequencies. All EMS frequencies consist of photons travelling at the speed-of-light in wave patterns. The light spectrum is the only frequency visible to the unaided human eye. But, the dots may not be photons - maybe they are bullet holes, bomb sites, smart-device hacks, social media disinformation dissemination? The dark shapes that surround the 'Earth' could be read as debris, or perhaps stealth space-craft, or maybe visual metaphors for danger? These shapes also appear in a few previous paintings - </span><i style="color: #0000ee; font-family: arial;"><a href="https://kathrynbrimblecombeart.blogspot.com/2024/01/the-cloud-is-not-cloud.html" target="_blank">THE CLOUD IS NOT A CLOUD</a></i><span style="color: #0000ee; font-family: arial;">,</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #0000ee; font-family: arial; text-align: center;"> </span><a href="https://kathrynbrimblecombeart.blogspot.com/2023/12/force-multiplication.html" style="background-color: white; color: #0000ee; font-family: arial; text-align: center; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank"><i>Force Multiplication</i></a><span style="background-color: white; color: #0000ee; font-family: arial; text-align: center;">, </span><a href="https://kathrynbrimblecombeart.blogspot.com/2023/11/ghost-sky.html" style="background-color: white; font-family: arial; text-align: center; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank"><i>Ghost Sky</i></a><span style="background-color: white; font-family: arial; text-align: center;"><span style="color: #0000ee;">, </span>and<span style="color: #0000ee;"> </span></span><i style="background-color: white; font-family: arial; text-align: center;"><a href="https://kathrynbrimblecombeart.blogspot.com/2023/02/ghost-shadows.html" style="text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">Ghost Shadows</a><span style="color: #0000ee;">.</span></i></span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><b>Cosmological perspective<br /></b></span><span style="font-family: arial;">The cosmological perspective taken in </span><i style="font-family: arial;">Why War? </i><span style="font-family: arial;">is an example of my imaginational metaveillance* approach and practice. I was thinking about swarming technology, pondering whether the techno-Cloud, enabling complex arrays of services and capabilities, could be described as a dexterous swarm with both benign and malign latencies. However, is the techno-Cloud the swarm or the swarm enabler? Or maybe its a swarm that can spawn more swarms? The proliferation of misinformation, disinformation and fake news/images across social media is an example of this conception of swarming. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium; text-align: center;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium; text-align: center;"><b>Signals</b></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium; text-align: center;">While the techno-Cloud is underpinned by bricks and mortar, for example, buildings housing massive computer infrastructure, relay nodes dotted across the landscape and space, and other tangible devices, I am particularly interested in the invisible infrastructure. Could </span><i style="text-align: center;">The Cloud is Not a Cloud </i><span style="text-align: center;">be a visualisation of military preparedness, geopolitical alignments, force posturing? Are we projecting onto the techno-Cloud fears of geo-political instability, and the type of war that needs no physical invasion? </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium; text-align: center;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium; text-align: center;"><b>Red and White</b></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="text-align: center;">I have used red and white to indicate potentialities, such as, attack, vulnerability, disguise, stealth, blood. I've painted them differently to indicate that as a team accompanying fighter jets, they have multi-modal capabilities. They all have autonomous functions. The Ghost Bat drone is a collaboratively developed drone between Boeing and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). It is the first military aircraft developed in Australia in more than 50 years.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">The three drones occupy the sky-scape, like stealthy super-heroes - maybe.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;"><b>Integrated Force<br /></b>This is an ambiguous painting - deliberately so. What are the dark drone-fragment-like shapes? Do they indicate proliferation of techno-power? Is this an image of integrated force? Or, do the fragments indicate disintegration? The recent Australian <a href="https://www.defence.gov.au/about/reviews-inquiries/defence-strategic-review" target="_blank">National Defence Strategic Review</a> (DSR) (2023) calls for an integrated force, rather than a joint-force. This term, like joint force, refers to national capabilities, but also integration with allied capabilities, for example, via partnerships such as <a href="https://www.pm.gov.au/media/joint-leaders-statement-aukus" target="_blank">AUKUS</a>. Integration is enabled by signalic connectivity and interconnectivity. These then enable interoperability of systems and devices. Interoperability is a foundational capability for integrated force structure.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">Let's get back to the dark drone-fragment-like shapes. Imagine signals connecting them all. Now imagine a disconnection - a disruption to the enabling signals. At one instance the painting could be an exemplar of integrated force - and - at the next instance - an image of catastrophe. I am reminded here by security scholar and analyst Jaquelyn Schneider's idea of the <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/01402390.2019.1627209" target="_blank">capability/vulnerability</a> paradox.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;"><b>Is the sky falling?<br /></b>What about the pale blue shapes that mimic the sky as well as the drone-fragments? Note there are no dark drone fragments above the Ghost Bat arc. However, there are some blue fragments below the drones. Is the sky falling? Or, are these pale blue 'fragments' indicators of space-based assets? If they are, can we read them as friendly or not? In the DSR, the MQ-28A Ghost Bat is described as a "sovereign autonomous air vehicle designed as part of an integrated system of crewed and uncrewed aircraft and space-based capabilities." (DSR 2023, 61). </span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">If the pale blue fragments are indicators of space-based assets, then the painting reveals a war zone from Earth to orbiting satellites, a techno-colonised landscape. Integration across the five domains - land - sea - air - cyber - space - is clearly a complex aspiration. </span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">What could go wrong?</span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">Clearly a lot more to say!!! For example, I've got more to say about skies, fake skies, fantasy and fake fantasies....deception.</span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #cc0000; font-size: large;">NEWS</span></b></p><p style="text-align: left;"><b><span style="font-size: large;">I am very happy to report that I am now a Dr. <br /></span></b><b><span style="font-size: large;">My PhD was conferred by Curtin University, Western Australia on the 1st December. </span></b></p><p style="text-align: left;"><b><span style="font-size: large;">You can access my PhD thesis: <br /></span></b><b><span style="font-size: large;"><i>Drones, Signals, and the techno-Colonisation of Landscape <br /></i>at <a href="https://espace.curtin.edu.au/handle/20.500.11937/93924" target="_blank">Curtin's espace </a></span></b></p><p><br /></p><p>Cheers,</p><p>Dr. 😊 Kathryn</p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><div class="blogger-post-footer">Thank you for visiting my BLOG. The latter is Australia's first military aircraft in 50 years, a joint development between the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and Boeing. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><i><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></i></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><i>Ghost Sky </i>is related to a number of my paintings that depict Ghost Bat drones or indications of their presence. A recent painting is <i><a href="https://kathrynbrimblecombeart.blogspot.com/2023/02/ghost-shadows.html">Ghost Shadows</a> </i>(2023). <i>Ghost Shadows</i> is similar to <i>Ghost Sky</i>, conveying a visual effect of dispersal or proliferation of militarised aircraft - maybe even weapons. While I called this effect a "fragmented force", contemporary signalic connectivity ensures interconnectivity and interoperability, thus belying traditional notions of fragmentation. Maybe a better word is <i>spawning</i>? </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;">With <i>Ghost Sky </i>I wanted to create a sense of a fake sky, generated by the presence of air and space-based systems and devices. The idea to use the drone as a visual metaphor for a fake sky expands upon ideas expressed in a few earlier paintings, for example, <i><a href="https://kathrynbrimblecombeart.blogspot.com/2017/03/anomaly-detection.html">Anomaly Detection </a> </i>(2017)<i> </i>and<i> <a href="https://kathrynbrimblecombeart.blogspot.com/2017/09/anomaly-detection-number-2.html" target="_blank">Anomaly Detection 2</a> </i>(2017) (below). In both of these earlier works I have used painted 'pixels' to form the drones' fuselages and wings (I refuse to say 'bodies'!). In this latest painting, <i>Ghost Sky, </i>it appears as if the pixels have morphed and erupted beyond their drone boundaries. Is this a kind of auto-generation, similar to generative AI capabilities? I do not know - it's a rhetorical, but interesting question. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;">I think <i>Ghost Sky</i> appears less ominous than <i>Ghost Shadows,</i> but don't let appearances deceive you!</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;">And, as always, lots more to say - but I will leave you to think about <i>Ghost Sky</i> for now.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhnexIntjhjKchrQvtBOc_2fmGEQSDyhvjG3chqa4LgVvgPZKq7ZDm7aGr86CHBNbwjsIQHCr4saqlM12g6uFalx690luIDKDqvNvbHMn8sQRRMQ3tLoYOQDPdMe5H7KZjKiAwVF4RYpdGci2W6dCuzpjXHI9SVIZVsO_20f1ZO4UAWfZk94EqDw/s670/Brimblecombe-Fox_Kathryn_Anomaly%20Detection_Oil%20on%20linen_120%20x%20180%20cm_2017__LowRes.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="446" data-original-width="670" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhnexIntjhjKchrQvtBOc_2fmGEQSDyhvjG3chqa4LgVvgPZKq7ZDm7aGr86CHBNbwjsIQHCr4saqlM12g6uFalx690luIDKDqvNvbHMn8sQRRMQ3tLoYOQDPdMe5H7KZjKiAwVF4RYpdGci2W6dCuzpjXHI9SVIZVsO_20f1ZO4UAWfZk94EqDw/w640-h426/Brimblecombe-Fox_Kathryn_Anomaly%20Detection_Oil%20on%20linen_120%20x%20180%20cm_2017__LowRes.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><i style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://kathrynbrimblecombeart.blogspot.com/2017/09/anomaly-detection-number-2.html" target="_blank"> Anomaly Detection (Number 2)</a></i><span face="Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 13.2px; text-align: center;"> Oil on linen 120 x 180 cm 2017</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><br /></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>Cheers,</b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>Kathryn</b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><br /></div><p></p><div class="blogger-post-footer">Thank you for visiting my BLOG. Our world is not only traversed by human beings and animals; it is also scoped by arrays of land, sky, space and sub/marine based sensors. These sensors, attached to various devices and systems, register, detect and transmit data using electromagnetic frequencies. Movement of data, therefore, occurs in realms of space and time that are beyond human and animal experiential dimensions of mobility. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Data is presented visually for human beings in graphics that overlay video or still images. Here, I am thinking about - for example - geolocating and terrain visualisation graphics, graphic recognition-squares that seemingly hover over the faces/heads of people, infrared markers monitoring human movement, guiding lines based on data transmitted from reversing cameras, on-board GPS screen-based directions, and crosshairs marking a remote operator's target.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><i>Suspended Landscape </i>plays with the appearance of computer-graphics. The continent of Australia is divided into squares, each one presumably containing information. If this painting was a screen, you could zoom in and out of each squared 'peep-hole'. Other dots and crosses mimic digital markers. Their purpose is ambiguous, maybe top secret? For me, I wanted to play with the idea of suspension - waiting, wondering, but also the idea that landscape is now suspended from 'hooks' of data. </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Each one of us, carrying a mobile phone, becomes one of these hooks. As we amble to work, play with our children in a park, fly in a plane, or speed off in a boat, our mobile devices can transmit and receive data, updates, and instructions at near light-speed. Unless signals are disrupted, or the power goes out and recharging your mobile phone is impossible, we are appendages or nodes in a ubiquitous data mapping system. </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;">While<i> Suspended Landscape </i>depicts the continent of Australia, the off-shore landscape is ambiguous. Maybe the splashes of red are close-up images of the Australian coastline. If so the digital system has dispersed the landscape across a screen. What for? Is it to closely analyse environmental impacts of climate change, or maybe it is a glimpse of a war gaming exercise. Maybe the dotted areas radiating outside Australia are pathways for future in-flow or out-flow exodus, maybe they are possible routes for incoming insurgents or combatants? </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Here, the idea of preparedness for future possibilities engenders suspense - as if dangling - waiting for something to happen. Yet, the painting also suggests a visual suspension of landscape, the continent laid out across a cosmic landscape. Perspective can shift from a possible aerial view to one where the viewer confronts the scene, like a spider web suspended across a gate-way. </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Shifting perspective - for me - is both literal and metaphoric. Please have fun imagining </span></span><i style="font-size: large; text-align: center;">Suspended Landscape's </i><span style="font-size: large; text-align: center;">many other possible interpretations!</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Cheers,</span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Kathryn</span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><p></p><div class="blogger-post-footer">Thank you for visiting my BLOG. However, while this is a specific focus, the robotic quadruped is also a visual metaphor to stimulate thinking about other robotic systems and devices. </span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">I depict the robotic quadrupeds because I've seen them in action at the Australian Army's Landforces expo in Brisbane in 2021 and 2022. While interested in seeing the robots, I was more interested in watching how people reacted to them. So many people responded as if these robots were real dogs. There were smiles, laughs, wriggles to respond to robotic 'wriggling', and lots of selfie photos with the robots. People bent down to look into the robotic 'face', smiling as they did so. The robotic quadrupeds, clearly controlled by remote operators in the expo hall, 'pawed' the ground [actually more like cats!], tilted their head as if inquisitive, wagged their behinds as if they were happy. I am sure there were other neutral or more circumspect responses to the robots, but these were not as obvious. </span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;"><b>Questions</b></span></p><p><span style="font-size: large;">I ask - in an era where so much technology is dual-use, how can we form resilient critical perspectives about human - machine interactions when normalising processes cross civilian and military arenas? I ask - how do we not fall into traps where we uncritically think we are in a relationship with a robot? I ask - if a robotic quadruped at a military expo elicits warm and fuzzy human reactions, how does this parlay into integrating human-robot partnering in the armed services? I ask - if a robot is present, for example, at an expo or an art exhibition, what happens to data it may collect via various sensors? What kind of training is provided for robotic developers by seemingly benign interactions with robots brought into places such as expos and galleries? </span></p><p><span style="font-size: large;"><b>Paintings</b></span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;"><i style="text-align: center;">Our Dog Delirium: Crash </i><span style="text-align: center;">[above] and</span><i style="text-align: center;"> </i><i style="text-align: center;">Verification Error: Identity Crash Site </i><span style="text-align: center;">[below] visually 'speak' to a confusion - our confusion between alive and synthetic - what is a dog in the twenty-first century? While you might be able to use your computer or phone to zoom in and out of the digital documentary photograph of the painting, the painting itself, as an object, offers a different kind of interactivity. While the title offers a clue, the viewer has to <i>imagine</i> how the painting may represent a zooming in and zooming out activity. The viewer might ask - If the ambiguous landscape juxtaposed with the map of Australia is a zoomed-in location, what location is it? Could it be the tip of Cape York Peninsular or part of a northern New South Wales coastline, or the edge of Wivenhoe Dam in Queensland? </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;">But, what if the image is, for example, <i>imagined</i> drone or satellite footage? If it is, then the landscape beyond the map depicts the oceans, seas and islands that surround Australia. If it is a drone or satellite image, then the viewer can <i>imagine </i>imaging sensors zooming in and out for a variety of scanning, documentary, surveillance, or targeting reasons.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><span>While the small crosses act as grid co-ordinates that might be seen on various military and civilian maps, I also 'see' them as possible memorial markers. Like the symmetry of a military cemetery the small crosses could represent memorials for the environment. </span><i>Zooming In and Out</i><span> could be a post-human map of a small section of a global memorial map. Perhaps it is a form of remembrance not only for the human species, but also for the planet. Each cross, zoomed into, may open into a shrine of remembrance - you can </span><i>imagine </i><span>this can't you?</span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; For example, a robotic companion in a childcare centre or a nursing home may display behaviours, through gesture and sounded words, of caring, interest and concern. These displays are designed to ensure that human beings <i>feel</i> cared for, protected, and even that they are experiencing a helpful relationship, albeit an unreciprocated one. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><b>Deception</b></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;">BUT, what if we thought of programmed mimicry as programmed deception? For example, what if a robotic medical assistant first responder to an accident detects, via various sensors, that at human being's vital signs indicate death is 90% likely to occur within half an hour? If the injured person asks "Am I going to be ok?", the robot could give a factual statement that the person has a 90% likelihood of dying unless x y or z happens within half an hour. This may, in fact, cause a heart attack due to shock and severe distress - and the person dies before half an hour - before medical intervention can take place. Or, the robot could mimic a caring human being, sounding out words associated with comfort, calming and caring. For example, the robot could sound out the words "You will be ok. The ambulance will be here in very soon. I will hold your hand while we wait."</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><b>Sound Out or Speak Out</b></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;">You may notice that I use the term "sound out" and "sounded words", rather than "speaking" and "spoken words" to indicate an audible robotic response to a situation or a question. I am experimenting with words we use to describe robotic or AI capabilities eg: thinking, creating, seeing, hearing, sensing. Is the use of these kinds of humanising words predisposing us to believing that robots and AI are becoming more like us? "Speaking" and "spoken words", I propose, carry so much more information about the character of <i>being</i> a human <i>being</i>. The term "spoken word" is laden with the multiple attributes of human expression! I add here that I am not excluding words spoken by those human beings who are deliberately manipulative and deceptive. A robot or AI cannot be deliberately deceptive, as that would imply some kind of intention - and intention is another of those words we seem to automatically use to describe robotic or AI capabilities. Intention ascribes a <i>will </i>to do or affect something. I would not describe AI or robots as having a <i>will</i>. Some would say - not yet! </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><b>Warfare</b></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Deception has long been a tactic in warfare. Robotic systems offer opportunities to mimic human behaviours to deceive an enemy. They could even possibly mimic caring as a form of programmed weaponised deception. Another example is AI-faked social media accounts that deceive, churning misinformation and fake news as tactics of information-warfare. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><i>Mimicked Meanings </i><span>and</span><i> </i><i>WHO/WHAT CARES?</i></span></b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><span>These new paintings are like visual thought bubbles. I use painted binary code, accompanied with words, to indicate algorithmic mimicry. I paint neural-network-like patterns or computer circuitry as creeping kinds of contagion. In <i>Mimicked Meanings </i>I place a robotic quadruped with a real dog, an eye with scoping crosshairs, and binary code 'instructing' the word EMPATHY with the word EMPATHY. There are other visual entendres indicating synthetic mimicry, but I will let you find them! </span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><span><br /></span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><span>In both </span><i>Mimicked Meanings </i><span>and</span><span><i> WHO/WHAT CARES? </i>I</span><span> play with Douglas Hofstadter's idea of the ambigram to suggest that same/same in the age of AI is not a game. In both paintings the background of the painting is marked with evenly spaced dots, clues to a world digitally geo-mapped for robotic systems.</span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">And, the fact that these are paintings, not reliant on digital or AI-assistant technology, is an act of resistance!</span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;">There's more to say - but, I will leave it to you now!</span><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"> </span>😊</span></div><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0px 40px; padding: 0px;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div></blockquote><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8y2xbcdJ2E6df7cPW1gCTOtyfwcox0j4mv6rPbWwXehcp4rVuGMNGalEqtCpC7kKAg8ZDquob_idJRDiBz-Pzeo0lsFU7g71EI__X07WiKFmzWTsH_jVejW8phuW-wOssRNIxKbdP-uC9_Opl2ZWP7eR1XHiBA_e_IxvWv_IaF8ga0vsaCkmOow/s821/Brimblecombe-Fox_Kathryn_WHO-WHAT%20CARES%20%5Bquestion%20mark%5D_%20gouache%20on%20paper_56%20x76%20cm_2023_72%20dpi.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="609" data-original-width="821" height="474" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8y2xbcdJ2E6df7cPW1gCTOtyfwcox0j4mv6rPbWwXehcp4rVuGMNGalEqtCpC7kKAg8ZDquob_idJRDiBz-Pzeo0lsFU7g71EI__X07WiKFmzWTsH_jVejW8phuW-wOssRNIxKbdP-uC9_Opl2ZWP7eR1XHiBA_e_IxvWv_IaF8ga0vsaCkmOow/w640-h474/Brimblecombe-Fox_Kathryn_WHO-WHAT%20CARES%20%5Bquestion%20mark%5D_%20gouache%20on%20paper_56%20x76%20cm_2023_72%20dpi.jpg" width="640" /></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">WHO/WHAT CARES? My father died in 2016, leaving behind copious supplies of electronic parts, a multitude of electronic gadgets, a large number of computers and computer parts, arrays of power cords, and various other gadgets and gizmos. Most of his supply has now been sold or given away, including two large aerials. I retrieved a box full of electronic gear. It's only recently that I knew what I needed to do with it! I am sure my PhD research into increasing military interest in the electromagnetic spectrum opened up the opportunity.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">You might like to read <a href="https://kathrynbrimblecombeart.blogspot.com/2016/03/two-paintings-of-my-dad.html" target="_blank">TWO PAINTINGS OF MY DAD</a> </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><b>So, Here We Are. </b></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;">I have created these five works as whimsical critique of AI generated images, particularly fake images. These act as a kind of violence on society. This violence needs addressing. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;">The materiality of the five pieces in the exhibition reminds us that AI technology also requires material components, structures and infrastructure. These all entail extractive processes, industrial manipulation, and manufacturing development. Each work is created on radio frequency resistant material, also from my father's stash. I like that the idea that resistance, presented in these analogue critiques of contemporary technology, is materially embedded in the actual works. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><b>Fake</b></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;">I have also used some of my father's old stencils, which he would have applied to the various gadgets he made or altered. In <i>Fake Landscape</i> (above) I have stenciled landscape-type words as labels, for example, I chose 'RANGE', used to denote frequency range, to denote a mountain range. 'PITCH' is used to denote the pitch of the mountain. I point out that there is even a fake fence, on the bottom right. This references electronic fencing to fend off wayward drones! In <i>War Zone </i>(below) I have stenciled 'CAUTION' and 'CITIZENS'. Here, I am sure my reasoning is self explanatory. In <i>War Zone</i> the row of five brown capacitors looks like a row of people - citizens. <i>Fake People </i>(further below) is a crowd of 'people', perhaps a crowd in a simulated virtual reality? Maybe a virtual reality war game?</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOf7fiE3WZTL50tuk7COgy_3w1rYIL-5RvlGzWFv2dfTmbVyCqzZYd3AmnZtyOZcE_bd0Ww3AqonYgNTWkOwDNdBpLXzZvtrAwndCitXh10h4nyjGVyTE3IVBdDabSRbOf0ChtNcdNLcTKbuxCe0ZxOxo1Xa0SKfVhaCiUEF8YtdEPJ0C2yh0/s1041/Brimblecombe-Fox_Kathryn_War%20Zone_HAM%20electronic%20parts%20%20on%20RF%20resistant%20material_21%20x%2030%20cm_2023%2080%20dpi.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="798" data-original-width="1041" height="490" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOf7fiE3WZTL50tuk7COgy_3w1rYIL-5RvlGzWFv2dfTmbVyCqzZYd3AmnZtyOZcE_bd0Ww3AqonYgNTWkOwDNdBpLXzZvtrAwndCitXh10h4nyjGVyTE3IVBdDabSRbOf0ChtNcdNLcTKbuxCe0ZxOxo1Xa0SKfVhaCiUEF8YtdEPJ0C2yh0/w640-h490/Brimblecombe-Fox_Kathryn_War%20Zone_HAM%20electronic%20parts%20%20on%20RF%20resistant%20material_21%20x%2030%20cm_2023%2080%20dpi.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i>War Zone</i> HAM electronic parts on RF resistant material 21 x 30 cm 2023</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVPnr-BDPQuoHnyiEqHiY54aOXsitsGeT6uVWXpzOlnzop-fH4rjwtRdbb9TPJGDww8YbtngCCCD06EigLD7eH0Qt7DiGb44m5Z5auvxYJiWPf6x1qsJbFZXazauRMR9MnIeWRJEi5XqZU3b9iIG-33OQ_DgL1nBcorYO1-0b_02fwIADRlIY/s955/Brimblecombe-Fox_Kathryn_Fake%20Sky_HAM%20electronic%20parts%20%20on%20RF%20resistant%20material_21%20x%2030%20cm_2023%2080%20dpi.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="780" data-original-width="955" height="522" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVPnr-BDPQuoHnyiEqHiY54aOXsitsGeT6uVWXpzOlnzop-fH4rjwtRdbb9TPJGDww8YbtngCCCD06EigLD7eH0Qt7DiGb44m5Z5auvxYJiWPf6x1qsJbFZXazauRMR9MnIeWRJEi5XqZU3b9iIG-33OQ_DgL1nBcorYO1-0b_02fwIADRlIY/w640-h522/Brimblecombe-Fox_Kathryn_Fake%20Sky_HAM%20electronic%20parts%20%20on%20RF%20resistant%20material_21%20x%2030%20cm_2023%2080%20dpi.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i>Fake Sky</i> HAM electronic parts on RF resistant material 21 x 30 cm 2023 </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><i>Fake Sky </i>is an array of blue transmitters and resistors. Robotic quadrupeds are used by military, security and policing forces. Recently I have noticed that the artworld is welcoming them into exhibitions as part of curatorial programming. Here, I hope criticality prevails, but I suspect the entertainment factor will win. Every encounter and activity a robot undertakes is a training experience providing copious amounts of data for their manufacturers and other users. I have a number of earlier paintings that also reference the Loyal Wingman/Ghost Bat drone. You can see them in my 2021 online exhibition <a href="https://kathrynbrimblecombeart.blogspot.com/2021/09/wingman-online-exhibition.html" target="_blank">Wingman (MQ-28 Ghost Bat) Online Exhibition</a></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><b>Ghost Bat</b></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;">With this new painting I was thinking about the name Ghost Bat, the name of a real <a href="https://australian.museum/learn/animals/bats/ghost-bat/#:~:text=Habitat,rare%20to%20find%20large%20colonies." target="_blank">Australian bat</a>, applied to a drone. So, that got me thinking about ghosts, bats and shadows, stealth and invisible aspects of contemporary war. I was also thinking about landscape, geographical, technological, military, and other-worldly. As regular readers know I am currently undertaking my creative practice-lead PhD with an examination of increasing military interest in the electromagnetic spectrum. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;">I 'see' the technological landscape as mostly an invisible one, a stealthy signalic techno-colonised landscape from Earth to orbiting satellites. My aim, in my work, is to make the invisible 'landscape' visible! Yes, hardware and devices mark and move through our physical environments, but enabling signals are transmitted wirelessly or via discrete cables [eg: undersea internet cables]. I am mostly interested in wireless signaling/transmissions that enable light-speed or near light-speed connectivity, interconnectivity, operability and interoperability of civilian and military systems and devices. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><b>Shadow or Shadows </b></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Initially I was going to call the painting <i>Ghost Shadow</i>, but then I decided to make the <i>shadow</i> plural - thus, <i>Ghost Shadows. </i>The plural draws in multiple aspects of drone and robotic technologies - especially the fact that they are nodes in a system. Thinking imaginatively, what kinds of shadows does the militarised techno-system cast? Could the system be a multi-faceted shadow that we don't see - except in my painting? Maybe we should go looking for shadows! If we thought of ourselves as bats, let's lurk in the night, in the dark, using imagination to see things beyond sight. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><b>Fragmented Force</b></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span>In </span><i>Ghost Shadows </i><span>a</span><span> Ghost Bat drone</span><i> </i><span>is identified as a fragmented force, a strange craft flying through the sky. This fragmentation 'speaks' to the drone's many capabilities, those disclosed by the developers, and those that have not been disclosed. The fragmentation evident in the whole painting alludes to pixels and the techno-reliance on imaging capabilities for operation, orientation, ISR, and targeting. Yet another interpretation could be that bits of the Ghost Bat drone have been flung into the sky. Has it spawned more bats? Or, has the drone been compromised? The dark large and small fragments might be shadow-indications of more drones or piloted aircraft - after all the Ghost Bat drone has been designed to accompany fighter jets. Thus, is this a scene of a mid-air battle between autonomously flown drones and piloted craft - debris scattered. But, is the debris material, or in an age of accelerating technological development, is it the debris of hopes and dreams?</span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Lots more to say - but I will leave the painting with you now! What do you think of the red fragments!?</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Cheers,</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Kathryn</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><i><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></i></div><div style="text-align: left;"><i style="font-size: large;"><br /></i></div><div style="text-align: left;"><i style="font-size: large;"><br /></i></div><div style="text-align: left;"><i style="font-size: large;"><br /></i></div><div style="text-align: left;"><i style="font-size: large;"><br /></i></div><div style="text-align: left;"><i style="font-size: large;"><br /></i></div><div style="text-align: left;"><i style="font-size: large;"><br /></i></div><div style="text-align: left;"><i style="font-size: large;"><br /></i></div><p></p><div class="blogger-post-footer">Thank you for visiting my BLOG. Using a visual ambigramatic [after Douglas Hofstadter] ploy in both paintings, I have painted tree-like patterns as if they are about to merge, or maybe even repel each other. It's your choice to decide! An ambigram can be read, with multiple meanings, in both an upside and downside orientation. But, they can also be read as the same....</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">The tree-like patterns are those of a natural tree or branching system [roots, vascular, leaves, lines on our palms etc], plus tree-like patterns uses in computer science ie: tree logic, neural networks, chip boards etc. In <i style="text-align: center;">Where's the Beating Heart? </i><span style="text-align: center;">the upper oval</span><i style="text-align: center;"> </i><span style="text-align: center;">represents natural life and systems, and the lower oval represents coded systems and their correlative hardware. Like an ambigram, the painting could be turned the other way - maybe orientation depends on aesthetics, but also beliefs about humanity, technology and the future?</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><b>Patterns</b></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;">I am not a computer scientist, nor am I an arborist, but as an artist I like to look for patterns, and I like to present what I see as provocations to prod questions. Regular readers will know that I have a keen interest in technology, undertaking technical research to inform my work. These readers will also know that my current PhD research examines increasing military interest in the electromagnetic spectrum [EMS - radio, microwave etc frequencies]. Without consistent uncongested or uncontested access to signal-transmitting frequencies in the EMS, much of our contemporary technology would flounder. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><b>Theatre of War</b></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;">Both <i>On the Edge of Being</i> and </span><i style="text-align: center;">Where's the Beating Heart? </i><span style="text-align: center;">have</span><i style="text-align: center;"> </i><span style="text-align: center;">been inspired by my research, particularly my interest in the idea of 'theatre of war', a phrase often used by 19the century General Carl von Clausewitz in his famous tome <i>On War. </i>Clearly the contemporary 'theatre of war' is different to the 19th century idea of 'theatre of war', but if war is seen as a performance, I do think performativity is still a component of war. We now have 'roles' played by technological systems and hardware that are militarised and militarise-able. Militarise-ability of civilian systems/hardware is a key interest of mine ie: connectivity, interconnectivity and interoperability of systems/hardware, are enabled by signals transmitted via EMS frequencies. New modes of war, such as cyber, information, hybrid, and network-centric warfare draw civilian systems into the 'theatre'. One example is the use of social media for information warfare - there are many other examples.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><b>Heart</b></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><i style="text-align: center;">Where's the Beating Heart? </i><span style="text-align: center;">poses questions about human being-ness and technological utility. As autonomous components are embedded into systems, human speed is bypassed. I ask, isn't human speed, the pace at which we work and think, part of our being-ness? This is just one of many questions I ask myself, and embed in my work. The tree-logic pattern 'pulses' with a predominantly red centre of painted conduits. Is this a fake heart? </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;">There's more to say, but I will leave that to you! </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;">Cheers, </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;">Kathryn</span></div> <p></p><div class="blogger-post-footer">Thank you for visiting my BLOG. It's up to you to ponder whether a battle or a meeting is likely. Or maybe it's something else. The free flowing tree-like branches at the top of the painting are posed with a more standardised neural network tree-like structure in the bottom half of the painting. I was thinking about being-ness vs utility. I was also thinking about trees - for example, computer science tree-logic/hierarchies and the age-old transcultural/religious tree-of-life. Both 'coded', but differently. A lot to say here, but I won't go on - and on...!</span></div><div style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><span style="font-size: medium;">I have not only painted different tree-structures, but I have used slightly different tones of colour in each section. The green in the top part of the painting is a more real-world tree or plant green, whereas the green in the lower section is a night-vision surveillance green. I have used different yellows and blues in each section, but the same cadmium red. This red dominates as each 'tree-scape' encroaches on the fiery and tumultuous centre. The red could indicate readiness - maybe for battle. The centre section could be a war zone, but it could also indicate fertile ground. Whatever it is, for me it symbolises a rubicon - like crossing the Rubicon River. </span><span>Maybe there is no way back, especially if we don't pay attention. </span></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><span><br /></span></span></div><div><span style="font-family: arial;"><span>In 2017 I created a painting called </span><i><a href="https://kathrynbrimblecombeart.blogspot.com/2017/07/crossing-rubicon.html" target="_blank">Crossing the Rubicon </a> </i></span></div><div style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: medium;"><br /></div><div style="font-family: arial;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;"><span style="font-size: medium; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;"><b>PhD - Light Speed</b></span></span></span></div><div style="font-family: arial;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;"><span style="font-size: medium; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;"><i>On The Edge of Being</i><i style="font-weight: bold;"> </i></span></span>came to me as I wrote one of my PhD chapters <span style="text-align: justify;"><i>Speed: Light Speed = c</i></span></span><span style="font-family: arial;">. In this case a colourful string of zeros and ones repeatedly instructs the word LIFE. This string of visualised code extends from a branch of the tree, depicted with a colourful array of roots. The tree could be a tree-of-life, offering another kind of 'code'. Like many of my paintings a cosmic-like background helps to create a sense of flight.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><blockquote style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0px 40px; padding: 0px;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><i>Unseen </i>was the source of inspiration for a collaboration with Brisbane-based internationally known jeweler <a href="https://margotmckinney.com/" target="_blank">Margot McKinney</a>. The small series includes a fabulous necklace that follows the graphic lines of the tree, and zeros and ones. Square cut and round gems 'form' the binary code. A series of gorgeous earrings were inspired by the spiral of binary code in <i>Picturing the Posthuman</i> (painting number 16). I like the fact that code has been extracted and aestheticised in my paintings and in jewels made from natural geologically formed gemstones. </span></div></blockquote><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b><span style="font-size: medium;">LIFE and War</span></b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;">The next 19 paintings start with examples of recent works, ending with other earlier paintings. You will notice that as I experiment with visalising and eastheticising normally invisible code, its relationship with militarised technology and militiarise-able civilian technology becomes more politically charged. In a world where notions of warfare now include information, cyber, hybrid, grey-zone, and network-centric warfare, the key role played by code and algorithms demands attention. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Various kinds of violence now insidiously play out in networks, enabled by light-speed transmission and reception of signals carried by radio and microwave frequencies in the electromagnetic spectrum. Signals are tentacular enablers and deliverers of codified data and instructions. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b><span style="font-size: medium;">Text Prompted AI Generated Images</span></b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;">This online exhibition also responds to recent hype surrounding text prompted AI image generation, using datasets of human artists' images scraped from the Internet. I offer my paintings of visualised code as a disruption and resistance to algorithmically generated image making. Painting is not reliant on digital or cyber technology, thus it has a capacity for independent critique, without feeding data back into the system. Interestingly I have discovered that one of my painting, in this online exhibition, has been scraped and used in a dataset - painting number 19 <i>Coded Landscape</i>. The binary code, 'instructing' the word LIFE, forms a landscape-like contour. It's kind of ironic that this painting was scraped. I add here, that the image scraped was a digital image of the painting, not digital artwork. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;">A few issues relating to text prompted AI generated images [not I do not call it AI Art!] include:</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><ol style="text-align: left;"><li><span style="font-size: medium;">That work created by human artists has been scraped with intent to build datasets, without consent from original artists. </span></li><li><span style="font-size: medium;">Currently, text prompted AI generated images appear very similar, exhibiting a banality that flags a creeping homogenisation of aesthetics. This is a quiet kind of violence. I am reminded of a statement made by Jean Baudrillard i<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="letter-spacing: -0.15pt;">n </span><i style="letter-spacing: -0.15pt;">Passwords</i><span style="letter-spacing: -0.15pt;">
(2003), where he describes a digitally coded destiny where it will be “possible to
measure everything by the same extremely reductive yardstick: the binary, the
alternation between 0 and 1”.</span></span></span></li><li><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: medium; letter-spacing: -0.15pt;">While AI generated images might be considered cultural activity, production or performance, it does not mean that all AI generated/assisted images are art. </span></span></li></ol></div><p></p><div><div id="ftn1">

It also raises questions about identity and verification of identity. Louise </span>Amoore’s concerns about
“how algorithms are implicated in new regimes of verification, new forms of
identifying a wrong or of truth telling in the world” 'speaks' to the role played by AI in image and identity verification. Could we, weirdly and dangerously, come to a time where verification of identity is only confirmed by a digital tick?</span></p>

I have an issue with this! While the word sensorium does contain the word sensor, sensorium is normally applied to the human or natural world sensorium, where different senses, from sight, to hearing, touch, hindsight, emotion, feeling, even sixth sense, are experienced. So, to apply <i>sensorium</i> to arrays of technological sensors implies an attribution of a range of senses that sensors do not have. </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><span style="text-align: center;">To avoid anthropomorphising technology we must pay closer attention to the language used to describe capabilities. My suggestion for the sensorium conundrum is to turn the noun <i>sensor</i> into a verb. Thus, the scoping and detection activities of sensors are acts of <i>sensoring</i>, not sensing. And, thus an array of sensors could be called a sensoration (like association, or delegation). </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><span style="text-align: center;"><b>PhD</b></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><span style="text-align: center;">I add here that my thoughts are part of a broader PhD creative practice-led research project (Curtin University, Western Australia) examining increasing military interest in the electromagnetic spectrum, as an enabler of technology, a type of fires (weapon), a manoeuvre space (tactics) and a domain (strategy). </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><b>Registering</b></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;">I do realise that human beings share the world with an ever increasing array of technological sensors, and therefore there is a relationship, whether clear or not to human beings. I add here that I doubt that sensors 'know' there is a relationship! Eyal Weizman (Founder of <a href="https://forensic-architecture.org/" target="_blank">Forensic Architecture</a>) and Matthew Fuller write about the sensor-sensing-human relational characteristic of contemporary life in their very thought provoking book <a href="https://www.versobooks.com/books/3801-investigative-aesthetics" target="_blank"><i>Investigative Aesthetics: Conflicts and Commons in the Politics of Truth</i></a> (2021). While using the word sensorium to encompass the sensor-human relationship, they do not scrutinise its anthropomorphising attributes. </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;">Weizman and Fuller do, however, mention the act of registering - of registration. The idea of registering/registration provided a way for me to think through the conundrum of using the word sensorium to encompass sensors and human/natural world sensing. I propose that both sensors and human beings register, and that this is the relational link between the sensor sensoration and the human sensorium. A sensor will register the presence of a human being and relay or store data relating to the human being's actions, condition etc. A human being may register the presence of sensors and mediate behaviour, or possibly not care. But, a human being's act of registering a sensor, or anything else for that matter, can entail an emotional reaction - even not caring is an emotional reaction. Whereas, a sensor is incapable of caring or not caring - full stop. </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><i style="text-align: center;"><b>Theatre of War: Sensoration<br /></b></i><span style="text-align: center;">Using the symbol for light-speed ie: c, and the symbol for photon ie: y, I have painted two outer circles. Each symbol in each circle is connected by a wavy line. These lines indicate wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum. This implies sensor signal connectivity and interconnectivity. An inner circle of cross-hairs coveys the idea of surveillance and monitoring, and the central cross-hair conveys the idea of targeting. This targeting could be by advertisers, information warfare bots, surveillance cameras, a drone's imaging technology or even the scoping lens of a weapon. </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><span style="text-align: center;">Without depicting actual sensors </span><span style="text-align: center;"><i>Theatre of War: Sensoration </i>visually<i> </i>critiques the idea that an array of sensors, or an environment of sensors, is a sensorium. I chose to use red and white to suggest that the sensoration - not sensorium - is a shared military and civilian space. The reliance on speed of light signal connectivity to relay data and instructions, in an network-centric world renders the civilian world of sensors ie sensoration militarise-able. </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;">I invite you to 'fly', in imagination, above, behind and around the sensoration. Regular readers will know I have created a number of paintings where I try to make visible the invisible aspects of contemporary militarised technology and war. By war, I mean not only kinetic warfare, but also information, hybrid, cyber and grey-zone warfare. The techno-cloud of interconnected and interoperable systems provides seeming instant access and connectivity to information, updates, news cycles, social media posts and posting and more. This is enabled by light-speed or near light-speed signal transmissions carried by frequencies in the electromagnetic spectrum (EMS). Speed is now an expectation.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><i><b>Cloudy War</b></i></div><div style="text-align: left;">In <i style="text-align: center;">Cloudy War </i><span style="text-align: center;">I have painted strings of binary code 'instructing' the word CLOUD. Circles of dotted lines carry the fake cloud theme further. And, yet more circles containing wave patterns reveal the underlying signalic character of this 'cloudy' war painting. Why waves? All frequencies in the EMS are made up of photons travelling in wave form at light speed. Radio waves have the longest wave lengths and gamma waves have the shortest. The radio to microwave frequencies are the most commonly used for transmission of signals that enable contemporary hardware and systems technologies. Congestion and contestation of bandwidths is prompting experimentation with other frequencies. Additionally AI systems are being <a href="https://www.darpa.mil/program/spectrum-collaboration-challenge" target="_blank">developed to optimise bandwidth </a>access, especially for the military. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Peeping out from behind the techno-cloud are hints of various militarised hardware - airborne drones, ground-based aerial nodes, a tank, a robotic quadruped, a ship, indications of satellites. And, of course there are other hidden elements - you just have to imagine them! </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">The 'fog of war' is now electromagnetically induced. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I could go on, but I'll leave you to ponder. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Cheers,</div><div style="text-align: left;">Kathryn</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><p></p><div class="blogger-post-footer">Thank you for visiting my BLOG. Also, the Internet, and even the Internet of Things (IoT). </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">But, did you know that the military also have terms like the <a href="https://www.arl.army.mil/business/collaborative-alliances/current-cras/iobt-cra/" target="_blank">Internet of Battlefield Things </a>(IoBT) and the<a href="https://www.army-technology.com/comment/internet-military-things-early-stages/" target="_blank"> Internet of Military Things</a> (IoMT)</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">All these 'internets' rely on the electromagnetic spectrum (EMS) for connectivity and interconnectivity, plus operability of hardware and systems, as well as inter-operability. The term dual-use, in a world where civilian technologies also rely upon the EMS becomes almost non-sensical. Why? Because in a world of not only kinetic warfare, we now have remotely operated systems, cyber warfare, hybrid warfare and information warfare. These draw civilian technologies into the various physical and cyber battlefields of our time. Our mobile phones, computers, remotely update-able vehicles and appliances, GPS, social media updates, cloud storage, cyber home assistants and more, can be, and in many instances are, tracked, hacked, surveilled, harvested for data, used as nodes and purveyors of viruses. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">What if the Internet of Things is ultimately a subsidiary of its spawned IoBT or IoMT? Where does that place the civilian in terms of complicity, unwitting or not? </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><i><b>Battle Cloud</b></i></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">My visualisations of 21st century technology and its Cloud are created with paint - oil paint or gouache and watercolour paints. I love using paint to critically examine contemporary militarised and militarise-able technology. Why? Because, unlike the technology I critique and examine, painting is not reliant on the EMS for creation, exhibition or storage. This independence provides a critical distance. It is a form of resistance.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I listened to a fascinating conference hosted earlier in the year by the <a href="https://www.disruptionlab.org/" target="_blank">Disruption Network Lab</a> in Berlin. The conference was called <i><a href="https://www.disruptionlab.org/the-kill-cloud" target="_blank">The Kill Cloud</a>. </i>One message from this bluntly titled conference was that the airborne drone needs to considered as part of a network. This resonated with me, and is why my PhD focusses on increasing military interest in the EMS as an enabler of technology, a type of fires (weapon), a manoeuvre space (tactics) and a domain (strategy). Any robotic hardware, whether an airborne drone, or a ground, sea or under-the-sea robotic system, functions as part of a network. The network is enabled by signals transmitted via EMS frequencies. As frequencies become more congested, due to not only increasing military needs, but also civilian needs, there is a heightened sense of urgency for militaries to dominate the EMS. Congestion is only one issue, another is contestation from state and non-state malign entities. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I chose to paint <i>Battle Cloud </i>in red, after hearing the term 'kill cloud'. Maybe I could have called it <i>Bloody Cloud </i>or <i>That Bloody Cloud. </i>I don't think I need to explain the title any more - you 'get' it.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">The washed out text running across the painting is binary code 'instructing' the word CLOUD. This is a reference to another recent painting <i><a href="https://kathrynbrimblecombeart.blogspot.com/2022/02/theatre-of-war-law.html" target="_blank">Theatre of War: Law</a></i> which is a response to recent news about research into an AI legal assistant for in-combat military situations. The human being becomes an algorithm?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">In <i style="text-align: center;">Threat, </i><span style="text-align: center;">binary code at the bottom of the painting 'instructs' the word HUMAN. The aerial view of what looks like a military air force base, seems to be viewed on a 'screen'. Perhaps this is drone footage? Does the code mean that a human being is monitoring the surveillance, identifying the threat, targeting the threat - or - does it mean a meaningless presence?</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;">I use the word 'instruct' because code is essentially instructional. By painting code I attempt to make visible normally invisible instructional forces that drive our techno-world. Painting is a form of resistance, as it does not feed data back into the system. A digital photograph of a painting feeds data about the photo, not the actual process of creating the painting. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><b>Internet of Battlefield Things</b></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;">Both paintings also indicate that interconnectivity via 'the Cloud' or the Internet of Battlefield Things [IoBT], enables interoperability across multiple domains. Another recent painting <i><a href="https://kathrynbrimblecombeart.blogspot.com/search?q=IoBT" target="_blank">Theatre of War: Internet of Battlefield Things</a></i> responds to this permutation of 'the Cloud'. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"> I have just listened to the proceedings of a very interesting and serious conference "The Kill Cloud: Networked Warfare, Drones and AI" hosted by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmm_HP_Sb_cQTs4NuBKByXs-r62uvWuY_" target="_blank">The Disruption Network Lab</a>, Berlin, March 2022. Sobering listening. It was a call-out to look beyond the drone [hradware], and to examine the system. This is exactly the focus of my PhD research, examining increasing military interest in the electromagnetic spectrum [EMS], as an enabler of technology, a type of fires, a manoeuvre space and a domain. Without reliable access to the EMS, connectivity, operability, interconnectivity, interoperability - at speed - could not occur. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;">And, there's a lot more to write and think about, but I will leave this to you!</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;">Cheers,</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;">Kathryn</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZpmfmzDOAGqJjLMOnpI74f41Sho-WdSNlv3oGtodsuAk7b434Irde-ZZIVYCjRPcbamzJhoyus5a4y6CJztIpYHPbPGs4K2yoP_m_BlhUaaGrzaArmCoF2Nr4WzvqK0TGiK0Zf446ckf6SezRMe6EuLLTbQZvDbJz6PUMVNVsDxPgRWOJnj4/s1019/Brimblecombe-Fox_Kathryn_Thrreat_Gouaceh%20on%20paper_30%20x%2042%20cm+2022_80dpi.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="721" data-original-width="1019" height="452" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZpmfmzDOAGqJjLMOnpI74f41Sho-WdSNlv3oGtodsuAk7b434Irde-ZZIVYCjRPcbamzJhoyus5a4y6CJztIpYHPbPGs4K2yoP_m_BlhUaaGrzaArmCoF2Nr4WzvqK0TGiK0Zf446ckf6SezRMe6EuLLTbQZvDbJz6PUMVNVsDxPgRWOJnj4/w640-h452/Brimblecombe-Fox_Kathryn_Thrreat_Gouaceh%20on%20paper_30%20x%2042%20cm+2022_80dpi.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i style="font-style: italic;">Threat </i>Gouache on paper 30 x 42 cm 2022</div><div style="text-align: center;"> </div><p></p><div class="blogger-post-footer">Thank you for visiting my BLOG. As you can see from the date of the above two quotes, Virilio was insightful and incisive in his critiques of technology and speed in the twentieth century. His book <i>Desert Screen: War at the Speed of Light </i>was first published in 1991, during the first Gulf War. Like Jean Baudrillard, Virilio saw this war's embrace of instantaneous signal transmission of instructions and imagery, as a historical milestone. </span></span><span style="text-align: center;">Since then, the utilisation of the electromagnetic spectrum to enable seeming instantaneity, has conditioned us to speed - light speed or near light speed signal connectivity, interconnectivity, to enable operability and interoperability across civilian and military technologies and systems.</span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium; text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><span face="Arial, sans-serif" style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;">One limit, if not the only limit for these technologies and systems is light speed. It is</span></span><b style="text-align: center;"> </b><span style="text-align: center;">"not something one can cross: you crash into it.” As we scramble to make sure speed gives us an edge, whether it's high frequency stock trading or weapon delivery/detection, how far/fast can we go?</span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium; text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><span style="text-align: center;">In</span><i style="text-align: center;"> Light Speed: Crash</i><span style="text-align: center;"> </span><i style="text-align: center;">(After Virilio) </i><span style="text-align: center;">I have tried to give an impression of speed. The cosmic landscape alludes to the fact that the electromagnetic spectrum is universal with a history embedded in the universe's cosmological history. The painting seems to indicate an imminent crash. A 'wall' of symbols visually suggests a limit. These symbols are c - light speed and y - photon. All frequencies in the electromagnetic spectrum are made up of photons travelling at the speed of light. Radio waves have longer wave lengths, while gamma waves have the shortest wave lengths. The light spectrum is the only one visible to the unaided human eye.</span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><b>NEWS</b></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;">In May, <i><a href="https://www.e-elgar.com/shop/gbp/autonomous-weapons-systems-and-the-protection-of-the-human-person-9781802207668.html" target="_blank">Autonomous Weapon Systems and the Protection of the Human Person: An International Law Analysis </a></i>by Dr. Diego Mauri, was published by Edward Elgar Publishing. The painting maps trajectories taken by hypersonic weapons. Ballistic missiles that can fly at hypersonic speeds have set flight paths, and are less manoeuvrable. Hypersonic glide and hypersonic cruise missiles are more manoeuvrable, thus they can evade detection. Evading detection means a target is more difficult to identify. Hypersonic weapons fly at speeds beyond Mach 5 [Mach 1 being the speed of sound]. I grew up on a naturally treeless blacksoil plain. While the western horizon is a flat line, often blurred by shimmery mirages, to the east, the Bunya Mt range cuts a majestic silhouette against expansive skies. Driving between my childhood home and Brisbane, to stay with my grandparents, meant travelling through fertile farmland, over the Great Dividing Range at Toowoomba, across the verdant Lockyer Valley, to the big city. </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: arial; text-align: center;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: arial; text-align: center;">As an adult I spent eighteen years living further west, in a town called Goondiwindi. Here, the landscape is not naturally treeless, but it is mostly flat. It is a harsher landscape due to less fertile soils. Prickly plants, grey plants, and hardy gums thrive. Driving to Brisbane meant crossing the Great Dividing Range at Cunningham's Gap, near a town called Warwick. One of the most spectacular landscapes I have ever seen, is on the return trip, as you drive towards Cunningham's Gap from the lowlands of the Brisbane Valley. The mountains loom like sentinels, shadows move like ghosts, and the sky is punctured by pointy peaks. It's beautiful! </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: arial; text-align: center;"><b><br /></b></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: arial; text-align: center;"><b>HYPERSONIC Landscape</b></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: arial; text-align: center;"><i>HYPERSONIC: </i><i>(AUKUS Dream)</i> suggests that invisible forces 'etch' landscape, creating new kinds of insidious scapes that mediate landscape, as well as concepts of environment. This mediation affects how we think of human movement, borders, sovereignty, security, life and death. A patch of red dots, left of centre, references geolocating, terrain visualisation and targeting computer-graphics. I've been writing and researching for my PhD, and this painting has been inside my head - my imagination - for a few weeks. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Here are some ideas, books and thoughts that have influenced <i>Interface </i></div><div style="text-align: left;"><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><b>Douglas Hofstader. <br /></b>I read Hofstadter's <i><a href="https://www.amazon.com.au/Godel-Escher-Bach-Eternal-Golden/dp/0465026567" target="_blank">Godel, Escher and Bach</a></i> (GEB) a number of years ago. A complex, innovative and imaginative book. During my PhD research I've been encouraged by my supervisor to think about <i><a href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ambigram" target="_blank">ambigrams</a></i>, a term coined by Hofstadter. I had forgotten that Hofstadter had written briefly about ambigrams in GEB, although I've often pondered on his ideas of recursion. For Hofstadter, an ambigram is a "calligraphic design that manages to squeeze two different readings into the selfsame set of curves." (GEB, p. P-19) It is something that can be read in both up and down orientations.<br /><br />As regular readers know, I often use painted binary code as a way to 'play' with and parody ideas of digital technology. The painted code represents the object or thing that I am painting or expressing. I enjoy hand painting something that is normally represented so precisely in digital media. In <i>Interface, </i>binary code for the word HUMAN is reflected in the text HUMAN. I am visually 'playing' with up and down orientations and meanings. The painting poses questions about what it means to be human in a world where human-machine relationships are increasing. For example, what about human work, including creative work, being co-opted or assisted by algorithms? <br /><br />The 'reflection' of the binary code in the word HUMAN, and vice versa, is a kind of ambigrammatic ploy to question how we might maintain a sense of being human in the twenty-first century. The code and the word HUMAN are like shadows, but can we see them? Maybe they are shadows of shadows? Where does that place us?<br /><br />The word 'interface' is both a noun and a verb. What kinds of 21st century technological interfaces should we be aware of, as we interact and interface with them? <br /><br /></li><li><b>The Cloud</b>. <br />Here I mean the technological 'cloud' - the Internet of Things (IoT) where interconnectivity and interoperability keep human beings in relationship with technological devices and systems. We cannot avoid, indeed escape, interfacing in the 21st century! Maybe this is what the shadows of shadows tells us? The background of <i>Interface </i>appears to be a cloudy tumultuous sky - but - is it a stormy sea? <br /><br /></li><li><b>More Cloud</b><br />Keeping with the 'cloud' theme, rather than the blue background representing a cloudy sky, I deliberately painted the binary code and letters in white to provide an alternative. Maybe the code/text is 'the cloud'. If you - the viewer - imagine looking up at this fake cloud, the blue background is a sky, even the cosmos. If you imagine being above the fake text-cloud, then the blue background is possibly a tumultuous sea. Maybe you are in front or behind the 'cloud', where it turns into a wall or barrier? This kind of imaginational flight, from below, to above, to around and beyond, is a critical form of engagement. I call it - <a href="https://kathrynbrimblecombeart.blogspot.com/2019/10/imaginational-metaveillance-online.html" target="_blank">imaginational metaveillance</a>. <br /> </li><li><b>Painting<br /></b>The paint medium requires no technological digital or cyber interfaces, yet it can be used to critique them. The hand of a human being is clearly evident. The dynamism between the paint and the paper surface, between the text and the background, 'speak' to relationships rather than interfaces. They 'speak' to relating rather than interfacing.<br /><br /></li><li>And, then there are ideas of post-humanity. <br /><br /></li><li>And, of course, one of my major interests/concerns - militarised technology and the militarise-ability of civilian technology. In an interconnected and interoperable world interfaces and interfacing are key!<br /><br /></li><li>But, I will stop here and let you ponder!</li></ul><div>Cheers,</div><div>Kathryn</div><div><br /></div></div><p></p><div class="blogger-post-footer">Thank you for visiting my BLOG. The mix of traditional kinetic activity with improvisation across old and new tactics and technologies again raises questions about asymmetric warfare. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><i style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;">THEATRE OF WAR: TECHNO-SEDUCTION</span></b></i></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;">This new painting, <i style="text-align: center;">Theatre of War: Techno-Seduction,</i> has a focus on the human. Yes! By presenting everything as an algorithm, even human beings, I pose questions about technological systems that are interconnected and interoperable. Questions about AI-enabled systems, that reduce or remove human operators are also posed.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><span>For interconnectivity and interoperability to work seamlessly, </span><span>foundational operative platforms need to be the same or very similar. </span><span>Hence my use of painted binary code. </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;">But does homogenisation at any level strengthen resilience or not? Maybe it poses a vulnerability - like pulling out the bottom card of a house of cards, is there risk of collapse. Where does the human being fit in a world of interconnectivity, interoperability and AI-enabled systems? </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><u><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;">So, what have I presented or 'instructed' in algorithmic form?</span></u></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;">At the top is SATELLITE. To the left in small zeros and ones is WAR. In the centre, as a circle of code, is MILITARY LAWYER. To the right is DRONE and angled from it is HELLFIRE. To the left of the circle in SURVEILLANCE. The three small circles of code 'instruct' HUMAN - are they warfighters, civilians, friend or foe, victims? The bottom 'instruction' is TARGET. Is the target human or not? If not a human target, destruction of buildings or infrastructure can still cause human fear, suffering and death. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;">All these 'instructed' entities are connected by lines that indicate signals, and therefore, reliance on frequencies in electromagnetic spectrum for connectivity and interconnectivity to enable information and data transmission, surveillance capabilities, sensor access, news broadcasting and so on. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;">The painting acts as a kind of map.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;">HUMAN</span></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;">Despite major advances in militarised and militarise-able technologies that remove many human operators and warfighters from the immediacy of conflict zones, the death and suffering witnessed in places such as Yemen, Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Somalia and now Ukraine, remind us that human beings remain in the loop, as my circles indicate, as victims. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;">And, we must not forget that human beings also start wars. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;">_______________________________________________________________</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;">In another recent painting and post <i><a href="https://kathrynbrimblecombeart.blogspot.com/2022/02/theatre-of-war-law.html" target="_blank">Theatre of War: Law</a> </i>I explain the reference to military lawyer.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><b><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;">NEWS</span></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><b style="background-color: white; color: #cc0000; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span><i>Third Text</i> Article</span></b><br /></span><blockquote style="background-color: white; border: none; color: #222222; margin: 0px 0px 0px 40px; padding: 0px; text-align: left;"><p></p><p></p></blockquote><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #050505; white-space: pre-wrap;">Thrilled that my article </span><a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/09528822.2022.2027670" target="_blank"><span style="color: #2288bb;"><span style="background-color: white; white-space: pre-wrap;">"</span></span><b style="background-color: white; color: #2288bb; text-decoration-line: none; white-space: pre-wrap;">Night Vision, Ghosts and Data Proxies: Paintings By War Artist Jon Cattapan</b></a><span style="background-color: white; color: #050505; white-space: pre-wrap;"><a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/09528822.2022.2027670" target="_blank">"</a> has been published online for </span><b style="background-color: white; color: #050505; white-space: pre-wrap;"><i>Third Text</i>, a leading peer reviewed international journal </b><span style="background-color: white; color: #050505; white-space: pre-wrap;">dedicated to the critical analysis of contemporary art in the global field. Key to his subsequent paintings were his experiences using night vision technology while accompanying Australian Peace Keeping forces on night patrols. The effect of the night vision green entered his paintings in ways that continue to 'speak' to us today. Thus, I analyse Cattapan's paintings through a 'future of war' lens-a future we are now living, nearly 15 yrs later. I argue that although the paintings were inspired by experiences in Timor Leste, the images could relate to the iterative modes of contemporary, and likely future war, ie: grey zone, hybrid, informational, cyber, as well as kinetic warfare. </span></div><div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;">Cheers,</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: medium;">Kathryn</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"> </span> </div><p></p><div class="blogger-post-footer">Thank you for visiting my BLOG.
